Guest Blog - Rent a Space

October 23

Kevin Murphy, Director of Rent a Space, discusses his progress so far in developing a Self Storage business in Liverpool.

So, you’ve purchased the building you know makes sense…… main arterial route (check), cracking visibility (check), over 40,000 passing vehicles per day (double check), busy local business economy (check) set amongst a dense housing stock (check).

Freehold acquired, legal pitfalls in the past and keys in hand!

Time to re-invent the 1960s, over-sized, under-loved and semi-neglected giant ‘shed’, into an all-singing, all-dancing, modern day self-storage facility, equipped with all the bells and whistles (and more) that our increasingly educated clients have now come to expect.

An empty building, divide it up and rent the space – what could be simpler?

Well…. there are the Builders, the plumbers, the electricians, the security experts, the cladders (lots of them), the roofers (not enough of them), the sign writers – the endless list of contractors, sub-contractors, sub- sub-contractors… there are all the accompanying programmes of works, changes in schedules, adaptations, modifications, alterations imposed at last minute by the business owners (ahem.) Simple?? Some days it’s enough to test one’s sanity, one’s priorities and overall one’s meaning in life!

Yet here we are, almost 3 months have passed and Rent a Space self storage Liverpool has evolved rapidly through its new-born and toddler phases (with accompanying teething problems) bumped through its stroppy hissy fit throwing teenage phase, (possibly another reference to the business owners?) And is almost ready to present itself to the word, as a grown up, done up and well-adjusted member of society!

As we approach week 10 of a vigorous and extremely challenging 12 weeks schedule of fit-out; units are almost complete, reception bears more than a passing resemblance to what it is destined to become, external signage is erected (and extremely visible!) and customers number one, then two and quickly followed by three, have signed up, paid up and welcomed with open arms and builders brews into our new facility.

Rent A Space (Self-Storage Liverpool) Ltd has arrived, with its fresh, if somewhat traffic slowing addition to the local architecture, it is here in all its scouse submarine inspired glory, very proud and extremely loud!

Located on Dunningsbridge Rd, (DBR as affectionately known), the 35,000sq ft facility now sits very proud and extremely loud alongside one of Liverpool’s main arterial traffic routes. The once un-loved document storage building is now unrecognisable in its current form and adds a fresh, dynamic if somewhat traffic slowing addition to the local architecture. Offering a calculated mix of trade units (directly fronting DBR), business storage rooms, office and workspace alongside traditional household self-storage units, the sheer flexibility of space offering, combined with the high specification and standard of the internal building works, has been extremely well received by the locals community – a point supported by the decision to open the doors some 2 weeks ahead of schedule (and handover) in order to satisfy a pent-up demand.

A good start, yes, but no more. ‘You’re only as good as your last game’ some famous person once said. In the case of Rent A Space ‘your only as good as your last client tells you you are!’ Not a brand to rest on its young morals, Rent A Space aims to become a household institution, ‘the hoover of all things space and self-storage related’, with families of Liverpool sharing tales of flexibility, facility security and expert advice whilst gathered around the dinner table…….maybe one day…..but for now it’s time to press on with the urgent matters of the day – a decision needs to be made on the colour of the tiles in the bathroom and a full investigation into why the yellow advertising board fronting Dunningsbridge Road is the wrong shade of yellow needs to take place.

Its all Rock n Roll at DBR!
